RESUME:
16-year-old Mehreen Miah's anxiety and depression, or 'Chaos', as she calls it, has taken over her life, to the point where she can't bear it any more. So she joins MementoMori, a website that matches people with partners and allocates them a date and method of death, 'the pact'. Mehreen is paired with Cara Saunders and Olivia Castleton, two strangers dealing with their own serious issues.
As they secretly meet over the coming days, Mehreen develops a strong bond with Cara and Olivia, the only people who seem to understand what she's going through. But ironically, the thing that brought them together to commit suicide has also created a mutually supportive friendship that makes them realise that, with the right help, life is worth living. It's not long before all three want out of the pact. But in a terrifying twist of fate, the website won't let them stop, and an increasingly sinister game begins, with MementoMori playing the girls off against each other.
A pact is a pact,...
IMPRESSIONS:
This wonderful book talks about mental health and suicidal persons. Three young girls want to give up on life and kill themselves : Mahreen, Cara and Olivia.
The story of Mehreen showed us that mental health is a serious thing that, sometimes in our traditions and communities, we didn’t take seriously. She didn’t have someone to lean on or talk to and that makes her state more serious.
Mental health is a serious matter and requires professional help. We use to neglect and not take seriously those who are in depression, mental illness etc. And in a muslim perspective, we have to know that it is an illness. Going through depression doesn’t mean that you’re a bad muslim, but you’re just having a hard time and need some help. Yes, there are people who can overcome it with their faith and their own (with Allah helps) but we have to know it’s an illness and an illness is treated with a professional.
There’s also Cara’s story. She can’t deal with the guilt of his father’s death after their car accident that led her to a wheelchair. Having her mom being over protective and suffocating her doesn’t help. Communication is the key word here because they're both going through a drama in their life (losing your dad/husband). They have both their own wounds to heal, but can’t support or help each other. When you speak frankly to the right person, a lot of misunderstandings can be solved.
Olivia, you can see joy in her face but everything is dark inside her. Rape! She leaves with fear every single day and can even talk to her mom about her situation. It’s heartbreaking.
There are many other topics in this great book.
A book that everyone must read!
